The Gesha variety
Gesha (or Geisha) is a unique and sought-after Arabica variety, recognized for its exceptional quality, especially when grown at high altitude. Its roots trace back to the coffee forests of Ethiopia, where it was discovered in the 1930s. From there it traveled to the Lyamungu research station in Tanzania, before being introduced to Central America in the 1930s. 1950 by CATIE in Costa Rica.
Not very popular at the time due to its fragile branches and moderate yield, the Gesha remained discreet until the 2000s, when the Peterson family, in Boquete (Panama), presented it in a coffee competition. It was then that its unique floral aroma, reminiscent of jasmine, and its complex profile conquered the world, placing Gesha among the most prestigious coffee varieties.
Today, the Gesha is most associated with Panama, where it fetches some of the highest prices at auction. Its success has led to its cultivation in other regions, although the quality and flavor profile can vary depending on where it is grown.
